International Transport Forum – Day 1

For five decades transport ministers in Europe have met to discuss and determine what is needed for an integrated transport system. Increased globalisation and international traffic has meant that it is the right time to expand the discussion on transport and, as a response to this, the decision was made to establish the International Transport Forum (www.internationaltransportforum.org) as an organisation within the OECD. (Another organisation within the OECD is the International Energy Agency.) Subsequently, nations outside the OECD have been invited to become members. Today there are 51 nations included. Brazil, India and China are in the process of becoming members.

They have decided to have an open forum once per year that is expected to become “transport’s Davos”. They have decided that this forum will always be in Leipzig. The German government is very keen to raise the profile of cities of the former German Democratic Republic. The theme for the first forum was “Transport and Energy” and it was the energy part that meant that the OECD directed its gaze towards Uppsala University and my Global Energy Systems research group.

In June last year I was invited to write a report on ”Peak Oil and the Evolving Strategies of Oil Importing and Exporting Countries”. The report was to form part of the paper for discussion at a round table conference in Paris in November 2007 (Contribution Aleklett.
To my great surprise I discovered that only four people had been invited to write reports on the future of oil.

The first day in Leipzig consisted of different workshops and an open forum. Various people had been invited to participate in panel debates in four different workshops with different themes. The only Swede to be invited to join the panel debate on “Reducing CO2 emission in goods transport” was Hasse Johansson, head of research for Scania.

My research group had also been invited to an open forum. We were given 90 minutes to present our research under the theme of, “The Future of Energy Supplies”. That felt great and, above all, it was wonderful for my Ph.D. students Bengt, Kristofer and Mikael to give presentations at such an important event. We will make our presentations available (on the internet) when we return to Uppsala on Monday.

Under 50-år har transportministrarna i Europa träffats för att diskutera och besluta om ett integrerat transportsystem. Ökad globalisering och internationella trafik har gjort det angeläget att vidga diskussionen om transport och som ett svar på detta beslutades det om att bilda International Transport Forum som en organisation inom OECD. En annan organisation inom OECD är International Energy Agency. Man har sedan bjudit in länder utanför OECD att vara medlemmar och idag är det 51 länder som är med. På gång som nya medlemmar har vi Brasilien, Indien och Kina.

En gång om året skall man ha ett öppet forum som förväntas bli ”transporternas Davos” och man har beslutat att detta forum alltid skall vara i Leipzig. Tyska regeringen är mycket angelägna om att lyfta fram före detta östtyska städer i rampljuset. Temat för det första forumet var Transport and Energy och det var energi temat som gjorde att OECD riktade sina blickar mot Uppsala Universitet och min forskargrupp Globala energisystem.

I juni förra året blev jag inbjuden att skriva en rapport om ”Peak Oil and the Evolving Strategies of Oil Importing and Exporting Countries. Rapporten skulle vara del av underlaget till en rundabordskonferens i Paris i November 2007.Till min stora förvåning upptäckte jag att det bara var fyra personer som blivit inbjudna att skriv rapporter om oljans framtid.

Första dagen i Leipzig bestod av olika workshops och ett öppet forum. Till fyra workshops med olika tema hade man bjudit in olika personer till paneldebatt. Till en av dessa som behandlade ”Reducing CO2 emission in goods transport” hade man bjudit in Hasse Johansson, som är forskningsansvarig på Scania som ende svensk.

Till ett öppet forum hade man också bjudit in min forskningsgrupp, som under 90 minuter fick presentera vår forskning under temat ”The Future of Energy Supplies”. Det kändes stort och framför allt var det stort för mina doktorander Bengt, Kristofer och Mikael att få hålla föredrag i ett så här stort sammanhang. Våra presentationer kommer vi att göra tillgängliga då vi kommer tillbaka till Uppsala på måndag.
