It is nearing midnight and we are enjoying the Swedish summer. The sun has just set and over the lake Siljan there is a pinkish sky. It never gets dark here at this time of year.
Today Wendsday the Tällberg Forum was inaugurated and 300 participants form the whole World have congregated in this beautiful corner of the Earth to discuss global problems. Last year’s forum ended with the conclusion:
”Do we know what to do? Probably yes. Will we do it? Probably not.”
When the founder of the Tällberg Forum, Bo Ekman, held a keynote speech, he referred to this conclusion as an introduction to this year’s forum. First we discussed ”planetary boundaries and tipping points”. The calculations by James E. Hansen from NASA that we need to attain a carbon dioxide level of 350 ppm became a theme for the panel discussion. Our present level is 385 ppm, so this means that we need to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions even more than we had previously thought.
Personally, I was a bit disappointed in James E. Hansen. He doesn’t realise how much the USA must do. We have other, radical suggestions for the future in and in the coming days I hope that we can present them.
Yesterday I was surprised by the Swedish Minister of the Environment’s lack of knowledge about Peak Oil. Today his assistants told me that he would be interested in a detailed presentation as soon as it can be arranged. This feels more positive, and I look forward to making a more detailed presentation to him.

Klockan närmar sig midnatt och vi njuter av den svenska sommaren. Solen har just gått ner och över sjön Siljan ser vi en ljusröd himmel. Det blir aldrig mörkt just nu.
Idag invigdes Tällberg forum och 300 deltagare från hela världen har samlats till denna natursköna del av världen för att diskutera globala problem. Förra årets forum avslutades med följande slutsats:
”Do we know what to do? Probably yes. Will we do it? Probably not.”
Då Bo Ekman, grundare av Tällberg forum, inledningstalade refererade han till denna slutsats och detta blev upptakten till årets forum. Första diskuterades ”planetary boundaries and tripping points”. James E. Hansen från NASA och hans beräkning att vi måste ner till en koldioxidnivå på 350 ppm vad det gäller koldioxid blev tema för paneldiskussionen. Just nu har vi nivån 385 ppm och det betyder att vi måste minska våra utsläpp av koldioxid ännu mer än vad vi tänkt os tidigare.
Personligen blev jag lite besviken på James E. Hansen. Han inser inte att det krävs mycket mer av USA än vad han diskuterar. Vi har helt andra radikala förslag för framtiden och de närmaste dagarna hoppas jag att vi kan framföra dessa förslag.
Igår var jag förvånad över Sveriges miljöministers okunskap om Peak Oil. Idag framförde hans medarbetare att han nu var intresserad av en detaljerad genomgång så fort som det fanns möjlighet till det. Det känns positivt och jag ser fram mot att i detalj få presentera Peak Oil.
