In his victory speech, President Elect Obama made the following pronouncement, ”I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face.” In my opinion, Peak Oil is the greatest challenge that we have before us and I hope that Barack Obama will, as president, accept the message that ASPO has promoted since the first ASPO conference in Uppsala in 2002. Global oil production has – or soon will have – reached its maximum.
The energy policy that Obama promoted during the election campaign can be viewed on the campaign’s website. He has made the following statement on oil, “Eliminate our current imports from the Middle East and Venezuela within 10 years”.
According to the USA’s Energy Information Agency, imports from the Middle East are 2.4 million barrels per day and imports from Venezuela are 1.1 million barrels per day. This means that daily imports will be reduced by one third. We can see also that Mexican exports to the USA are likely to be zero in 10 years’ time which means that the USA will lose an additional 1.3 million barrels per day.
In 10 years there is the possibility that Iraq may be able to increase its exports by 3 million barrels per day compared to today’s level. Venezuela will also probably maintain its export volumes. Also, The International Energy Agency (IEA) asserts that Saudi Arabia will be increasing its export volumes until 2030.
It is completely unrealistic to expect that no part of this oil will find its way to the USA. President Elect Barack Obama’s ambition to reduce imports of oil is, of course, necessary but to expect that the USA will be able to become independent of oil supplies from the Middle East and Venezuela is completely unrealistic. This reality will also be important for future political decisions concerning the Middle East. Security briefings over the coming weeks’ will open the eyes of the coming President.

I sitt segertal gjorde blivande president Obama följande uttalande: ”I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face.” Enligt min åsikt är Peak Oil den största utmaning som vi har framför oss och jag hoppas att Barack Obama som president kommer att ta till sig det budskap som ASPO har framfört sedan den förta ASPO-konferensen i Uppsala år 2002. Den globala oljeproduktionen har nått eller kommer i en nära framtid att nå maximal produktion.

Blivande President Barack Obamas ambitionen att minska importen av olja är naturligtvis nödvändig, men att USA i framtiden inte skulle vara beroende av olja från Mellanöstern och Venezuela är helt orealistiskt. President Carter created the department of energy. It now spend 25 billion dollars per year and has had 30 year to solve the probelm. President Obama proposes spending 15 billion dollars per year on new energy sources (renewable???? or clean coal and nukes???) for ten years. Why should we believe Obama’s energy department 2 will have any more effect than Carter’s energy department 1? The energy department spends a good part of it’s money designing new nuclear weapons will the new energy depertment do the same?
