Since 2002, the organisation “Science and Society” has investigated the public’s confidence in researchers and the attitudes of young people to research. The latest research shows that the public’s confidence in researchers has never been greater and that 78% of those surveyed had great or very great confidence in researchers at universities. That feels very good!
The most interesting result from the research is that 40% of young men and 30% of young women can contemplate a career in research. That is truly wonderful. I can see evidence of this interest myself as a researcher at Uppsala University. Just now I have 9 Ph.D. students and undergraduates working on a variety of projects.
We who work as professors and supervisors for research students would, without difficulty, be able to supervise one more Ph.D. student and there is no problem finding interesting research projects. However, we cannot do this since we lack the grants to pay additional Ph.D. students. According to current regulations I must be able to show that I have the economic means to support a Ph.D. student for four years before he or she can be taken on. Salary, oncosts, university pay rises and so on mean that approximately 2,500,000 Swedish Crowns (US$310,000) is needed to take on a Ph.D. student during the 4 years that completion of a Ph.D. degree is estimated to require.
If our youth that today dream of research are to be given the chance to become researchers then this will require very strong support from the government, Swedish business and why not even the public? Maybe we should have a gala event where we collect money to support our youth so that they can have the chance to become researchers. Our future needs these young people!

Sedan 2002 har organisationen Vetenskap och Allmänhet undersökt allmänhetens förtroende för forskare och ungdomars inställning till forskning. Den senaste undersökningen visar att allmänhetens förtroende för forskare aldrig har varit större än nu och hela 78% hade stort eller mycket stort förtroende för forskare vid universitet och högskolor. Det känns väldigt bra.
Det intressantaste med undersökningen är ändå att 40% av de unga killarna och 30% av de unga tjejerna kan tänka sig en forskarkarriär, helt fantastiskt. Detta intresse märker jag själv som forskare vid Uppsala universitet och jag har just nu 9 doktorander och examensarbetare som arbetar med olika projekt.
Vi som arbetar som forskningshandledare skulle utan vidare kunna fördubbla antalet doktorander, handledarna finns där och det är inga problem att hitta intressanta forskningsprojekt, men vi kan inte göra det eftersom det saknas anslag att anställa doktorander. Enligt de regler som gäller måste jag kunna visa att jag har ekonomiska medel att anställa en doktorand under fyra år innan hon/han kan bli antagen. Med lön, arbetsgivaravgifter, universitetspåslag, mm, betyder det att behövs ungefär 2.500.000 kr för att anställa en doktorand under de fyra år som det beräknas att det skall ta att bli färdig doktor.
Om våra ungdomar som idag har forskningsdrömmar skall ges en möjlighet till att bli forskare så krävs det en kraftig satsning från staten och svenska företag och varför inte från allmänheten. Vi skulle kanske ha en gala där vi samlar in medel till våra ungdomar så att de kan få möjlighet att bli forskare. Vår framtid behöver dessa ungdomar.
