Europe’s energy security hangs by a frail thread that passes through Ukraine, i.e. the natural gas pipeline from Russia. Both partners in the ongoing conflict between Gazprom and Ukraine have promised that the gas will continue to flow to Europe from Russia through Ukraine while Gazprom threatens to stop the flow to Ukraine. The price of natural gas in Russia is only a fraction of the price for the same gas in the EU. Nations that were previously part of the Soviet Union pay a discounted price. For Ukraine a price half that in the EU is discussed.
Since 1996 I have observed how natural gas can be used as a tool of political power. Once again, Russia has demonstrated how much power it has. Once again we see an example that the most important foundation stone of society is energy. For the last 50 years energy has flowed freely and those nations that have consumed the greatest amounts of energy have blossomed. We see now that a number of flowers have begun to droop and the question is which of these will wither.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraina must be solved. The signal this gives to leaders around the world is that questions regarding energy must be given priority. As a physicist I must once again remind readers of the first law of thermodynamics: Energy cannot be created but only converted from one form to another.
Just now it is -11 degrees Celsius in the home of Celsius, Uppsala. I am planning to converted stored bioenergy in birchwood into warmth.

Europas energisäkerhet hänger på en skör tråd som passerar Ukraina, det vill säga naturgasledningen från Ryssland. I den pågående konflikten mellan Gazprom och Ukraina har båda parter lovat att gasen från Ryssland till Europa skall få flöda igenom Ukraina medan Gazprom hotar att stänga flödet till Ukraina. Priset på naturgas i Ryssland är en bråkdel av priset inom EU och prismässigt finns det rabatterat pris för länder som tidigare tillhörde Sovjetunionen. Vad det gäller priset till Ukraina är det halva priset till EU som diskuteras.
Ända sedan 1996 har jag följt och bevakat hur naturgas kan användas som maktmedel och än en gång har Ryssland demonstrerat vilken makt man har, än en gång får vi ett exempel på att samhällets byggsten nummer ett är energi. De senaste 50 åren har energin flödat och de länder som svalt den största mängden energi har blomstrat. Vi ser nu att en del blommor börjar att sloka och frågan är vilka som kommer att vissna.
Vad det gäller konflikten mellan Ryssand och Ukraina så måste den lösas. Signalen till ledare runt om i värden är att energifrågan måste prioriteras och som fysiker måste jag än en gång påminna om termodynamikens första huvudsats: Energi kan inte produceras utan bara omvandlas från en form till en annan.
