Yesterday at 12 noon local time in Washington, USA history was written when Barack Hussein Obama took the oath as the president of the United States. An enormous crowd was there and an enormous number of people around the world followed this historic moment via TV. I myself watched this historic moment in a hotel bar in Amsterdam.
My research group has collaborated with the University of Groningen since 2006. In Groningen there is a gigantic natural gas field and one can assert that Groningen is Europe’s centre for natural gas. The university has ambitions to become a centre for energy research and we are very glad that they want to collaborate with us and last Monday myPh.D. student Bengt and I visited Groningen. Bengt is working on a thesis on natural gas security in the 27-member state European Union (EU27) and an important part of his work is to determine the future domestic production in EU27. We will do this work together with Professor Catrinus Jepma from Groningen. On the way back to Sweden we passed through Amsterdam and it was therefore that were able to find a hotel bar in which to witness the historic moment.
With the gas conflict between Russia and Ukraine as a background we can state that the research we started three years ago is very relevant. We have collected an enormous dataset for those nations that export gas to EU27, we have developed models for future production and the range of uncertainty in our prognoses is continuously decreasing. We fear that increased dependence on imported natural gas can become a decisive factor in the fate of EU27.
With Obama’s choice of Steven Chu as new Secretary of Energy I hope that that USA can begin a new chapter in its energy policy. Steven Chu is, like me, a professor of physics and I assume that the laws of physics will now be given greater weight than economic theories. We both know that energy can never be produced but only transformed. The economic advances of the 20th century are coupled to the transformation of stored chemical energy in fossil fuels. During the 21st century a paradigm shift must occur and other energy transformations must be coupled to the economic growth of our time, a growth that requires ecological thinking.

Igår klockan 12 amerikansk Washingtontid skrevs historia då Barack Hussein Obama svor eden som Förenta Starternas president. Ofantligt många var på plats och ofantligt många i USA och runt om i världen följde detta historiska ögonblick via TV. Själv följde jag detta historiska ögonblick i en hotellbar i Amsterdam.
Sedan 2006 har min forskningsgrupp samarbete med University of Groningen. I Groningen finns ett gigantiskt naturgasfält och man kan påstå att Groningen är Europas centrum för naturgas. Universitetet har ambitioner att bli ett centrum för energiforskning och till vår glädje vill man samarbeta med oss och i måndags var min doktorand Bengt och jag i Groningen. Bengt arbetar med en doktorsavhandling om naturgassäkerheten i EU27 och en viktig del i detta arbete är att bestämma den framtida inhemska produktionen i EU27 och detta arbete skall vi göra tillsammans med professor Catrinus Jepma från Groningen. På väg tillbaka till Sverige passerade vi Amsterdam och det var därför som vi fick söka upp en hotellbar för att bevittna det historiska ögonblicket.
Med gaskonflikten mellan Ryssland och Ukraina som bakgrund kan vi konstatera att den forskning som vi inledde för tre år sedan är högaktuell. Vi har samlat ofantligt stora datamängder för de länder som exporterar gas till EU27, vi har utvecklat modeller för framtida produktion och våra prognoser för framtiden blir allt säkrare. Vi är rädda för att ett ökat beroende av importerad naturgas kan bli en framtida ödesfråga för EU27.
Med Obamas val av Steven Chu som ny energiminister hoppas jag att USA skriver ett nytt kapitel i sin energipolitik. Steven Chu är som jag själv professor i fysik och jag räknar med att fysikens lagar skall få större betydelse än ekonomiska teorier. Vi vet båda att energi aldrig kan produceras utan bara omvandlas. De ekonomiska framgångarna under 1900-talet kan kopplas till omvandling av lagrad kemisk energi i fossila bränslen. Under 2000-talet måste det ske ett paradigmskifte och andra energiomvandlingar måste kopplas till vår tids ekonomiska tillväxt, en tillväxt som kräver ekologiskt tänkande.

Med vindenergins 10% andel av elproduktionen måste problem uppstå på marknaden. Jag menar att vindkraften måste alltid prioriteras, när det blåser. Då måste vattenkraften underordna sig och minska temporärt. Är detta reglerat ekonomiskt i lag? Vem betalar Fortum, Vattenfall och Eon för detta?
