Every 15 minutes NYMEX (New York Mercantile Exchange) updates the current crude oil price. On Tuesday it exceeded US$80 per barrel for some hours. Yesterday at around noon New York time the price rose rapidly from around $78.40 up to $81.60 per barrel, i.e. an increase of three dollars. Since then the price has held steady over $80 per barrel. Before the day is over we will know whether the price has, once again, exceeded the magic threshold of $80 per barrel for 24hours.
Simultaneously the value of the US dollar has fallen so that, for most people in the world, the oil price rise is not as great. For many years it has been noted that the price of oil rises during the autumn months to then decline towards Christmas. If the price follows this pattern in the near future it will mean that we have reached a new price level of around $75 per barrel. If the price continues upwards this will be an indication that we have reached a new production plateau despite increased demand, i.e. we have returned to the conditions of 2005.

I går vid middagstid rusade priset från ca 78.40 till 81.60 dollar per fat, dvs en ökning med 3 dollar. Sedan dess har priset varit stabilt över $80 dollar per fat. Innan dagen är slut vet vi om priset på nytt passerat en magisk gräns på $80 per fat under 24 timmar.
Samtidigt försvagas värdet på dollarn så för flertalet i världen blir höjningen inte lika stor. Under många år har man sett en ökning av priset under höstmånaderna för att det sedan går neråt fram mot jul. Om pris bilden kommer att följa den trenden den närmaste tiden betyder det att vi nått en ny prisnivå runt $75 per fat. Om priset fortsätter uppåt har vi en indikator på att vi nått en ny produktions platå trots ökad efterfrågan, dvs vi är tillbaka till 2005.
