It is very important to have good colleagues when one leads a research group and Global Energy Systems at Uppsala University is no exception. This photograph was taken when we gathered after summer.
In the front row to the left of me is Professor Larry Hughes from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada. Larry came in August for 5 months of “sabbatical leave” and if you study his homepage you can see that he has worked on energy security and climate change for many years. During autumn he has inspired us to begin new research projects and we hope for continued collaboration.

To my right is Karin Liljequist who, together with Kersti Johansson at the far right, have worked to determine the world’s total energy production. They have studied 129 different crops and determined the energy production in the crops as well as in the byproducts that are produced. Their thesis was finalised in May and, during summer and autumn, we have worked on a scientific publication that has just been accepted by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences’ journal Ambios.
Between Karin and Kersti stands Leena Grandell who is new to the group. Leena is from Finland and received her licentiate degree in Helsinki. The intention is that she will expand this work into a Ph.D. during the coming two years.
At the rear farthest to the left is Kristofer Jakobsson who has been a Ph.D. student for the past two years. Krister’s first publication was on the reliability of the prognoses from the EIA and IEA. The main theme of his thesis will be resource limitations and economic modelling.
To the right of Kristofer is Anton Redfors. At the start of this year Anton contacted me to inquire whether I had any contacts in China and to ask whether I could suggest any degree studies that he could do when he planned to travel to China during the spring. During the 2006/7 academic year the Institute of Architecture in Stockholm had a Master degree course on the topic of BEYOND OIL: SHANGHAI. Pod cars were part of the traffic solution that came out of this course and, since one of the world’s first test tracks for pod cars is in Uppsala, I wanted to connect these two things in a thesis. Anton traveled to Shanghai and produced the foundation for his thesis. His report, “A Field Study of Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) in Shanghai” is now available to read at our website.
Just behind me is Mikael Höök who has had a fantastic third year of Ph.D. studies. A high point was the licentiate degree last spring. Furthermore, we have seven scientific publications where he is first author. The article that has received most attention is on coal production in the USA. Mikael has received invitations from around the world to speak on that work.
Farthest to the right to the rear is Bengt Söderbergh. Bengt is now putting the final touches on his Ph.D. thesis that will be submitted for printing after New Year. During his four years of studies on natural gas Bengt has become one of the world leaders in this area. The article on Norwegian natural gas published last summer has, for example, immediately become part of the course literature at the distinguished Howard University in the USA.
During autumn, two new degree students have begun work, David Karlsson and Ulrika Lundén. Their projects will be presented next year.

Det är enormt viktigt att ha bra medhjälpare då man leder en forskningsgrupp och Globala energisystem vid Uppsala universitet är inget undantag. Då vi samlades efter sommaren togs denna bild.
Främsta raden till vänster om mig har vi professor Larry Hughes från Dalhousie University, Halifax, Kanada. Larry kom i augusti för 5 månaders ”sabbatical leave” och om ni studerar hans hemsida kan ni se att han under många år arbetat med energisäkerhet och klimatförändringar. Under hösten har han inspirerat oss till nya forskningsprojekt och vi hoppas på fortsatt samarbete.

Till höger om mig står Karin Liljequist som tillsammans med Kersti Johansson längs till höger arbetat med att bestämma den totala energiproduktionen i världen. Man har studerat 129 olika grödor och bestämt energiinnehållet i själva grödorna, men också i de restprodukter som produceras. Deras examensarbete var klart i maj och under som maren och hösten har vi utarbetat en vetenskaplig artikel som just blivit godkänd av Kungliga vetenskapsakademins tidskrift Ambios.
Mellan Karin och Kersti står Leena Grandell så är ny i gruppen. Leena är från Finland och har tagit en licentiatexamen i Helsingfors. Tanken är att hon de närmaste två åren skall vidareutveckla det arbetet till en doktorsexamen.
Överst längst till vänster har vi Kristofer Jakobsson som är doktorand sedan två år tillbaka. Krister fick sin första publikation om hur pålitliga prognoser från EIA och IEA är. Huvudspåret i hans avhandling kommer att bli resursbegränsningar och ekonomisk modellering.
Till höger om Kristofer har vi Anton Redfors. I början av året tog Anton kontakt med mig och undrade om jag hade kontakter i Kina och om jag kunde föreslå något examensarbete som han kunde göra då han planerade att åka till Kina under våren. Arkitekthögskolan i Stockholm hade läsåret 2006/2007 ett master program som arbetade med BEYOND OIL: SHANGHAI. Spårbilar (Pod cars) var en del av trafiklösningen och då en av världens första testbarnor för podcars finns i Uppsala ville jag koppla samman detta i ett examensarbete. Anton åkte till Shanghai och arbetade fram ett underlag för sitt examensarbete och rapporten ” A Field Study of Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) in Shanghai” finns nu till tillgänglig att läsa på vår hemsida.
Snett bakom mig har vi Mikael Höök och det har varit ett fantastiskt tredje doktorandår för Mikael. En höjdpunkt var licentiatexamen i våras men dessutom har vi sju vetenskapliga publikationer där han är försteförfattare. Den mest uppmärksammade är artikeln om kolproduktion i USA. Mikael har fått inbjudningar runt om i världen för att komma och prata om det arbetet,
Längst till höger har vi Bengt Söderbergh och Bengt lägger nu sista handen på sin doktorsavhandling, som skall lämnas till tryckning efter nyår. Bengt har under sina fyra års studier av naturgas blivit en av världens ledande i området. Artikeln om Norsk naturgas, som publicerades i somras, har till exempel direkt gått in som kurslitteratur vid det anrika Howard University i USA.
Under hösten har två n ya examensarbetare börjat, David Karlsson och Ulrika Lundén, och deras examensarbeten kommer att presenteras nästa år.
