Normally I think it is interesting and exciting to travel to different places for conferences and presentations. But it is with a heavy heart that I make today’s journey to Houston. Tomorrow there will be a silent remembrance for Matt Simmons and it is still difficult to accept that Matt will not be with us “Peakists”. I came to Houston late in the afternoon, collected my hire car and began to drive to the centre of the city and my motel. When I booked the room it seemed to be quite centrally located but reality showed it to be a motel outside the Interstate 610 “loop” around Houston. The five-lane highway with its amazing multi-level intersections indicates that thoughts of peak oil were far away when it was designed. We needed Matt so that Houston could come up with alternative ideas.

Normalt brukar jag tycka att det är intressant och spännande att resa till olika platser för konferenser och föredrag, men dagens resa till Houston känns mycket tungt att göra. I morgon är det en minnesstund för Matt Simmons och det är fortfarande svårt att acceptera att Matt inte är med oss ”Peakister”. Jag kom till Houston sent på eftermiddagen, hämtade ut min hyrbil och började köra mot centrum och mitt motell. Då jag bokade rummet verkade det vara ganska centralt, men verkligheten visade sig vara ett motell utanför ringleden 610 runt Houston. De femfiliga motorvägarna med sina fantastiska planskilda korsningar indikerar att här är tanken på Peak Oil långt borta. Matt hade behövts för att få Houston på andra tankar.
