About 400 people came to the Museum of Fine Arts to honour the memory of Matt Simmons. Despite the tragic fact that Matt is no longer with us it was a bright celebration. Since the remembrance has already been described on the internet, “Matt Simmons remembered at MFAH event”, I will describe some personal memories.
In October 2001 Colin Campbell and I decided that we would organize the world’s first Peak Oil workshop to be held in May 2002 in Uppsala. To be able to call it an international workshop we needed to have a speaker from the USA. We chose Matt Simmons who had just presented a study on future natural gas production in the USA. Matt was very happy to come but he had a problem. The workshop was to occur over a Thursday and Friday and one of Matt’s daughters was to graduate on the following Saturday. Matt came and gave his presentation on Thursday. He made the following statement to Sweden’s television broadcaster TV4, “We need a wake up call. We need it desperately. We need basically a new form of energy. I don’t know that there is one.” (information on the workshop). That Friday he flew back to Houston to participate in the High School celebrations, but what made that trip special was that on Saturday morning when he opened the Houston Chronicle he could read on the front page that he had been in Uppsala and had spoken at the world’s first Peak Oil conference (read the article here).
The reason for this is that we had invited Bruce Stanley from AP, Associated Press, to the conference and his article carrying Matt’s message spread over the entire world. It was in that article that the expression “Peak Oil” was used for the first time in the international press and Matt was a fantastic ambassador for Peak Oil. We in ASPO, the Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas, will always remember Matt Simmons.
The fact that, since then, we met every year and sometimes several times per year and that we exchanged ideas and thoughts via email meant that I really regarded Matt as one of my friends. His wife Ellen used to accompany him and it was common for us to discuss our children when we met which made the entire Simmons family part of our circle of acquaintances.
Matt and Ellen also used to tell us about their family in their Christmas cards and I especially remember one year when their five daughters were included in a photograph. I then suggested to my five Ph.D. and undergraduate students, (who are all young men), that we should merge our activities with Matt’s with the lure being, naturally, the five daughters.
While Matt was writing “Twilight in the Desert” we discussed the book’s contents occasionally and I thought that it should, in reality, be submitted as a doctoral thesis. That did not happen but, nevertheless, I regard the book as Matt’s thesis and “Twilight in the Desert” will certainly become known as one of the most influential works he has bequeathed to our future.

Eftersom själva minnesstunden redan finns omnämnd på nätet, ”Matt Simmons remembered at MFAH event”, väljer jag att nämna några personliga minnen.

För att kunna kalla det för en internationell workshop krävdes det att vi hade en talare från USA och valet blev Matt Simmons, som just hade presenterat en studie om framtida naturgasproduktion i USA. Matt ville mycket gärna komma men han hade ett problem. Workshopen skulle vara på en torsdag och fredag och en av Matts döttrar skulle ta sin ”studentexamen” på lördag. På fredag flög han tillbaka till Houston för att vara med på studentfirandet, men vad som gjorde denna resa så speciell för Matt var att han på lördag morgon då han öppnade Houston Chronicale kunde läsa på förstasidan att han varit i Uppsala och talat på världens första Peak Oil konferens (läs artikeln här).

Det faktum att vi sedan dess träffades varje år och ibland flera gånger per år och att vi bytte idéer och tankar via e-mail gjorde att jag verkligen räknade Matt som en av mina vänner. Det faktum att hans fru Ellen brukade vara med honom och att det är vanligt att man diskuterar barn då man träffas blev hela familjen Simmons en del av vår bekantskapskrets.
Matt och Ellen brukade också berätta om familjen i sina julkort och jag minns speciellt ett år då de fem döttrarna fanns med på ett fotografi. Jag framförde då till mina 5 doktorander och examensarbetare, som alla var unga män, ett förslaget att vi skulle slå ihop vår verksamhet med Matts verksamhet och lockbetet var naturligtvis de fem döttrarna.
Under arbetet med ”Twilight in the Desert” diskuterade vi då och då bokens innehåll och jag tyckte att den egentligen skulle presenteras som en doktorsavhandling. Så blev det inte, men jag betraktar ändå boken som Matts avhandling och ”Twilight in the Desert” kommer säkert att blir Matt Simmons stora framtida fotavtryck.

Det var väldigt kusligt att följa utvecklingen av oljekatastrofen i Mexikanska Gulfen, med Matt Simmons som den synbarligen enda som hårt ifrågasatte BP:s uppgifter om oljeläckans egentliga orsak, förlopp och storlek. Att höra hans väldigt modiga och kontroversiella uttalanden som sedan abrupt tystnade när han gick bort. Omskakande och sorgligt att en hjälte som mer än någonsin behövs gick bort i förtid.
