Dan Brown – The Lost Symbol: The Langdon Escape from the Library of Congress

“The Lost Symbol” by Dan Brown is one of the books that I read last summer. The story plays out in Washington and one of the dramatic scenes is when the lead character, Robert Langdon, escapes his pursuers by lying down on a conveyor belt that is used to transport boxes of books between the Library of Congress Jefferson Building and the Library of Congress Adams Building. At the time that I was reading the book I was also invited to make a presentation at The IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Gothenburg. I ate lunch with, among others, Jeanne Drewes, one of the heads at the Library of Congress. Of course I asked if the escape route exists in reality. “Certainly”, she said “and if you come to Washington I will give you a guided tour”. I am now in Washington and have received my tour.

Robert Langdon’s escape begins when he disappears down the stairs at the circular desk in the centre of the reading room (see the picture). Down there begins the conveyor belt that ends in the Adams Building. I did not see the start but I did see where Robert Langdon arrived and we could see that, technically, what he was supposed to have done was possible. But it would not be a hugely built Robert Langdon that could travel on the belt. I tried to measure the aperture and concluded that it was approximately 50 cm x 50 cm. The question is whether Tom Hanks, who plays Robert Langdon in the film of the book, is thin enough.

Jeanne tested whether she could fit and she was exactly the right size. Thanks Jeanne for giving me this unique guided tour of the Library of Congress. I am sure that there are many admirers of Dan Brown who are very envious of me.

”Den förlorade symbolen” av Dan Brown var en av de böcker som jag läste i somras. Handlingen utspelar sig i Washington och en av de dramatiska scenerna är då huvudpersonen Robert Langdon flyr sina förföljare genom att ligga raklång på ett transportband som man använder för att transportera lådor med böcker mellan Library of Congress Jefferson Building och Library of Congress Adams Building. Just då jag läste denna del av boken var jag inbjuden att hålla föredrag på en världsbibliotekskonferens i Göteborg och åt lunch med bland andra Jeanne Drewes, en av cheferna på Library of Congress. Självklart frågade jag om flyktvägen existerade i verkligen. Javisst sa Jeanne ”och om du kommer till Washington skall jag ge dig en guidad tur”. Jag är nu i Washington och har nu fått min guidade tur.

Flykten börjar då Robert Langdon försvinner ner för trappan i den runda disken i centrum av läsrummet (se bilden). Där nere finns början på transportbandet som slutar i Adams Building. Jag såg inte början men väl den plats där Rober Langdon skulle har kommit fram och vi konstaterade att det rent tekniskt är möjligt, men det är inte en allt för kraftig Rober Langdon som kan åka på bandet. Jag försökte mäta öppningen och komfram till att den var ungefär 50×50 centimeter. Frågan är om Tom Hanks, som spelar Robert Langdon, är tillräckligt smal.

Jeanne testade om hon kunde få plats och hon var av precis rätt storlek. Tack Jeanne för att jag fick denna unika guidning av Library of Congress, och jag är säker på att det finns många beundrare av Dan Brown som är mycket avensjuka på mig.
