The flow of electronic media that streams into my email inbox every day is considerable and there is not enough time to study it all in detail. However, yesterday I saw a headline that caught my attention – that the shale gas reserves in the USA had been overstated. I traced the information back to an article from Bloomberg News that cited information from the US Department of Energy . The article described mainly that the official estimate for the reserves in the so-called Marcellus shale gas formation had been reduced by 66 %. The estimate for total US shale gas reserves has been reduced by 42 %. I wrote about the Marcellus formation in my book and was very skeptical about the official reserve estimates so it feels somewhat satisfying that my doubts have been confirmed. The Marcellus shale gas reserves contain quite a lot of natural gas liquids that is classed as oil in collections of oil production statistics. This means that the future oil production from that area must now be revised. I have also addressed this in my book. It remains to be seen if this shock from the USA will dampen the excessively optimistic faith that many have in shale gas as a source of energy.

Det mediaflöde som varje dag strömmar in i min elektroniska brevlåda är ganska stort och tiden räcker inte till att studera allt i detalj men igår var det en rubrik om att skiffergasreserverna var överskattade i USA som fångade mitt intresse. Jag spårade informationen tillbaka till en artikel hos Bloomberg News och artikeln citerade ny information från U.S. Energy Department. Det var framförallt reserverna i den så kallade Marcellus skiffergas formationen som hade skrivits ner med 66 procent. Totalt hade den amerikanska skiffergasreserven skrivits ned med 42 procent. Jag har skrivit om Marcellus formationen i min bok och då varit tveksam vad det gällde rapporterade reserver och det känns bra att dessa tveksamheter nu bekräftas. Reserverna i Marcellus innehåller ganska mycket flytande naturgas, som klassas som olja i statistiken och det betyder att framtida oljeproduktion från området också måste revideras, något som jag också tar upp i boken. Nu återstår det att se om denna chock från USA kommer att dämpa den överdrivet optimistiska tron på skiffergas.
