Four Peak Oil doctors / Fyra Peak Oil doktorer

Dr. Mikael Höök, Dr. Bengt Söderbergh, Professor Kjell Aleklett, Dr. Fredrik Robelius, and Dr. Kristofer Jakobsson.

On Friday 24 February Kristofer Jakobsson defended his doctoral thesis and that means that I can now draw a line under 8 fantastic years. During March I will celebrate my 67th birthday which means that I will not be permitted to be principal supervisor for any additional doctoral students. When Fredrik Robelius began his studies in 2003 it was Peak Oil that was the unifying theme in his thesis titled, Giant Oil Fields – The Highway to Oil”. Bengt Söderbergh began work with me as an Honours student in the spring of 2005. In January 2006 I was able to take him on as a Ph.D. student. It seemed natural that Bengt would study Peak Gas and he defended his doctoral thesis “Production from Giant Gas Fields in Norway and Russia and Subsequent Implications for European Energy Security” on 19 February 2010. Doctoral student number three was Mikael Höök and Peak Coal was one of the subjects in his thesis, ”Coal and Oil – The Dark Monarchs of Global Energy”. Kristofer Jakobsson began as an Honours student in January 2007 and his work was so good that we were compelled to find support to keep him with us. The Energy Authority granted us the funds so that Kristofer could be appointed as a doctoral student. With three doctoral theses already addressing “Peaks” it was obvious that Kristofer would examine the Peak issue and its coupling to the economy. His thesis ultimately received the title, “Petroleum Production and Exploration: Approaching the End of Cheap Oil with Bottom-Up Modeling”. All four theses can be downloaded from Uppsala University. For me it seems like a fairytale that a telephone conversation that I initiated with Colin Campbell in December 2001 could lead me to begin research on Peak Oil and that during 8 years I have supervised four “Peak Ph.D.s” to successful completions. In all honesty I must admit that it would have been difficult to do without the support of Colin Campbell and ASPO.

Fredagen den 24 februari disputerade Kristofer Jakobsson och det betyder att jag nu kan sätta punkt för åtta fantastiska år. Under mars månad blir jag 67 år och det betyder att jag inte får vara huvudhandledare för några fler doktorander. Då Fredrik Robelius började i februari 2003 var det olja och Peak Oil som var den röda tråden i hans avhandling med namnet ”Giant Oil Fields – The Highway to Oil”. Bengt Söderbergh började som examensarbetare våren 2005 och i januari 2006 blev det möjligt för mig att anställa honom som doktorand. Det blev naturligt att Bengt skulle studera Peak Gas och avhandlingen ”Production from Giant Gas Fields in Norway and Russia and Subsequent Implications for European Energy Securety” försvarades den 19 februari 2010. Doktorand nummer tre blev Mikael Höök och Peak Coal var ett av ämnena i hans avhandling ”Coal and Oil – The Dark Monarchs of Global Energy”. Kristofer Jakobsson började som examensarbetare i januari 2007 och hans arbete var så bra så det gällde att få medel för att han skulle kunna bli kvar. Energimyndigheten beviljade medel och Kristofer kunde anställas som doktorand. Med tre avhandlingar med inriktning mot ”Peak” blev det naturligt att Kristofer skulle titta på peak-problematiken och dess koppling till ekonomi. Avhandlingen fick namnet “Petroleum Production and Exploration: Approaching the End of Cheap Oil with Bottom-Up Modeling”. Alla fyra avhandlingarna kan laddas ner från Uppsala universitet. För mig känns det helt sagolikt att det telefonsamtal som jag ringde till Colin Campbell i december 2001 kam att medföra att jag skulle börja forska om Peak Oil och att jag under 8 år har lyckats handleda fyra ”Peak-doktorer” till lyckade disputationer. I ärlighetens namn måste jag säga att det hade varit svårt att göra det utan Colin Campbell och ASPO som stöd för verksamheten..
