During 6 intensive days Michael, Olle and I have read and corrected 350 pages of the book that was provided to us as a 350 Mb PDF file! The file was so large because it includes 110 illustrations scanned with a resolution of 600 dpi. From the beginning we were agreed that the book would be written in British English but the typesetters in India changed the spelling to American English – possibly with an eye to the US market. This meant that we needed to change the text in 20 illustrations. There were other standards that Springer in New York decided to change when they decided that the book would be a “trade book” that would not only be sold through the “Earth Sciences” section of scientific bookstores and markets but would also be placed in other strategic places to arouse the interest of browsing purchasers. We will see if Springer succeeds with this strategy. The last thing I did tonight was to check that all the references to the figures were correct and three of the 200 references were wrong. Despite the fact that I have a broadband connection it took over 30 minutes to transfer the file to Dropbox where the typesetters in India wanted it at the start of their day in India so that they could begin to make the corrections we asked for. At the moment I am involved in an intensive triangle of activity between Chennai, New York and Uppsala.

Filen var så stor för att den innehåller 110 illustrationer som är skannade med upplösningen 600 bbi. Vi var från början överens om att det skulle vara Brittisk engelska, men boksättarna i Indien med blicken mot den amerikanska marknaden fick för sig att ändra till amerikansk engelska. Vi fick nu ändra på texten på 20 illustrationer. Det fanns andra normer som man också ändrade på då Springer i New York nu bestämt sig för att boken skall bli en ”trade book” som inte bara skall finnas i boklådornas avdelning för ”Earth Sciences” utan även ligga staplad på strategiska platser för att locka köpare. Vi får se om Springer lyckas med den strategin. Det sista jag gjorde i natt var att kontrollera att alla referenser till figurerna var riktiga och 3 av de ca 200 referenserna var felaktiga. Trots att jag har en bra bredbandsuppkoppling tog det över 30 minuter att föra över filen till Dropbox där boksättarna i Indien ville ha den på deras morgon för att direkt kunna börja med att rätta allt som var fel. Just nu har vi en intensiv triangelväxelverkan mellan Chennai, New York och Uppsala.
