The American Petroleum Institute, API, that represents more than 500 companies in the oil and natural gas industry, has surveyed the views of American voters on oil and natural gas. Only 1016 registered voters were surveyed. However, the message from this limited group before the US Presidential election is very clear. All of 71% support increased access to American oil and natural gas resources. 90% believe that more oil and gas development could lead to more US jobs and 87% think that this investment would lead to lower energy costs.
At the same time, almost two thirds of those surveyed do not like the energy policy delivered by President Obama from Washington. There are too many restrictions. A controversial question has been whether the so-called “Keystone XL Pipeline” from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico should be built. At the moment, Obama has postponed a decision on the pipeline until after the election. The fact that 75% think that it should be built may mean that it could become an important election issue. Approximately the same number think that permission should be given for more areas off the US coast to be developed for oil and gas production. The environmental movement has a hard struggle before it. Historically it has been the Republicans that have been closest to the oil industry.
