Description of the scientific field: Uppsala University already has an established stature in energy research with the engagement in the Standup and Innoenergy projects (www.standupforenergy.se/; http://www.kic-innoenergy.com/). Uppsala University is now in the process of further strengthening its energy research profile within geosciences, and widening our commitment towards sustainable development. The Department of Earth Sciences (www.geo.uu.se) has selected energy as one of its future prioritized themes. This new position will work within the existing Global Energy Systems group alongside our other research groups involved with carbon capture and storage, resource geology and wind power.
The scientific area addressed is broadly described as quantification of fossil fuels, renewable energy sources and other natural resources, and theoretical / numerical treatment of energy and resource flows in the natural and societal systems. The scientific field is of necessity multidisciplinary, to be able to address the physical and socioeconomic factors that regulate the supply of energy resources to society.
