One of the world’s largest oilfields is Kashagan in Kazakhstan. When this 13 billion barrel field was discovered in the year 2000 there were production projections of 2 million barrels per day, i.e. equivalent to that of Prudhoe Bay in Alaska. Production difficulties have been enormous and they currently estimate that an oil price of over $120 per barrel is required for production to be profitable. When they began production they encountered another setback. The gas from the field was so corrosive that the pipelines failed. Now they fear that it will take two years to replace the old pipelines with more corrosion-resistant ones. This is yet another example of the fact that the days of cheap oil are behind us.

Ett av världens riktigt stora gigantfält är Kashgan i Kazakhstan. Då man år 2000 hittade det 13 miljarder fat stora fältet spreds en förhoppning om en produktion med 2 miljoner fat om dagen, dvs en produktion jämförbar med Prudhoe Bay i Alaska. Utvinningsproblemen har varit gigantiska och man räknar med att det krävs ett oljepris över 120 dollar per fat för att det skall vara lönsamt. Då man började producera kom nästa kalldusch, gasen från fältet var så frätande så att pipelines gick sönder. Nu befarar man att det tar två år att byta ut de gamla pipelines med nya som tål den frätande gasen. Detta är ännu ett exempel på att den billiga oljan inte finns bakom hörnet.
