Production Decline Curves of Tight Oil Wells in Eagle Ford Shale

The research that began in 2013-14 when I was a guest professor at the University of Texas in Austin became first a graduate thesis (by Linnéa Lund) and was then developed into a scientific paper in the journal Natural Resources Research. The paper is titled Production Decline Curves of Tight Oil Wells in Eagle Ford Shale. It has been published in Open Access format so that anyone can obtain it.

From the starting point of the production curves that we present (see the figure) I have, in the book “A World Addicted to Oil” [in Swedish], estimated the profitability and long term production trends for tight oil in the Eagle Ford region. I have shown how a large proportion of the total production from a well is achieved within only a few years. After 10 years approximately 80% of the final volume of oil has been produced (depending on how many years one decides to continue production). Note that the rate of oil production for the 10 years from 20 to 30 years of well life is far lower than seen during the first 12 months of production. The total volume of production after 20 years is only approximately 15 fold that obtained during the first month of production. Since the production rate during the first month can vary markedly, this “15 fold” rule can be useful in decision-making by companies regarding future production from fracked wells.

Den forskning som började 2013—14 då jag var gästprofessor vid University of Texas Austin, blev först ett examensarbete (Linnéa Lund) och har sedan vidareutvecklats till en vetenskaplig publikation i tidskriften Natural Resources Research med titeln:  Production Decline Curves of Tight Oil Wells in Eagle Ford Shale. Artikeln är publicerad med Open Access och det betyder att ni kan nå den.

Med utgångspunkt från de produktionskurvor som vi presenterar (se figuren) har jag i boken ”En värld drogad av olja beräknat lönsamhet och långsiktiga produktionstrender för Eagle Ford. Jag visar här hur stor del av produktionen man uppnått efter ett antal år. Efter 10 år har man utvunnit omkring 80 procent beroende på hur många år man bestämmer sig att producera. Notera att produktionen under 10 år från 20 till 30 år är mycket mindre än vad man får första året. Totala produktionen efter 20 år är ungefär 15 gånger första månadens produktion. Då första månadens produktion kan variera markant betyder det att denna 15-regel kan vara en bra regel för företagen att besluta om framtidens produktion för en frackad brunn.
