Today I have visited Moderna Museet [“The Modern Museum”] in Stockholm with my grandchildren Arvid and Olof, their parents and grandmother. When we entered the exhibition hall we encountered the fairly recently donated artwork “Drums” by artist Olav Wesphalen who was born in Germany but lives and works in Stockholm and New York. The artwork was a part of the “Modern exhibition 2010” at Moderna Museet. At the exhibition there was also a painting of a diamond ring by Olav Wesphalen. Magnus Bons wrote this about the “Drums” sculpture:
“The paintings of jewels were created at the same time as the sculpture Drums (2010). Like a petrified fountain a pair of coupled oil drums produce a black pool of oil. This colourful contemporary pop art sculpture can be thought of as contrasting with the more low-key paintings. But the works are united by the reference to carbon, the common element of oil and diamonds, and by the greed that is the motivation behind extraction of these substances. They reflect not only the excessive in our culture but also the paranoid (and sometimes longing-filled) fantasies on failure and collapse.”
The two streams of oil are united through the barrels into a peak and you can certainly understand why I thought of “Peak Oil” when I saw this.

Har idag varit på Moderna Museet i Stockholm tillsammans med barnbarnen Arvid och Olof, deras föräldrar och Mormor. Då vi gick in i utställningshallen möttes vi av det ganska nyligen donerade konstverket ”Drums” av konstnären Olav Westphalen, som är född i Tyskland men bor och arbetar i Stockholm och New York. Konstverket var del av Modernautställningen 2010 på Moderna Museet och den köptes in och donerades av Theodor och Isabella Dalenson. På utställningen 2010 fanns det också en målning på en diamantring av Olav Westphalen. Så här skriver Magnus Bons om skulpturen:
”Målningarna av juveler tillkom samtidigt med skulpturen Drums (2010). Likt en förstelnad fontän producerar ett par på varandra staplade oljefat en svart oljepöl. Denna färggrant nutida popkonstskulptur kan tyckas sticka av mot de mer lågmälda målningarna. Men verken förenas genom referensen till kol, oljans och diamanternas gemensamma grundämne, och till den girighet som är drivkraften bakom utvinningen av dessa ämnen. De speglar inte bara överflödet i vår kultur utan också de paranoida, och ibland längtansfulla, fantasierna om misslyckande och kollaps.”
De två strålarna förenas genom faten till en topp och ni förstår säkert att jag tänker på ”Peak Oil” då jag såg skulpturen.
