The low oil price has meant that the number of rigs engaged in fracking is declining dramatically and in a few months production of shale oil will also decline. Now the low oil price has also affected the expansion of production from Canada’s oil sands. Shell has just decided to withdraw its application for its heavy oil project Pierre River. The plan was that the installation would produce 200,000 barrels per day. They have not abandoned entirely their plans for a future project. For the environment this is a positive result. In 2009 Shell was estimated to be the world’s most carbon-intensive oil company due to its investments in production from oil sands.

Nu drabbar också det låga oljepriset utbyggnaden av produktionen från Kanadas oljesand. Shell har just beslutat att dra tillbaka sin ansökan för sitt tungoljeprojekt Pierre River. Planerat var en anläggning som skulle producera 200000 fat om dagen. Man överger inte helt planerna om ett framtida projekt. För miljön är det ett positivt beslut. År 2009 beräknades att Shell var världens kolintensivaste oljebolag på grund av deras satsningar på utvinning från oljesand.
