USA’s crisis package and giant oilfields / USA:s krispaket och gigantiska oljefält

Yesterday President Obama signed into law the House of Representatives’ decision to inject $787 billion into the economy. An important day for the USA. In his speech before signing, he pointed out the importance of transforming the USA’s energy system. The entire infrastructure will be modernized, new railways, repaired roads, new powerlines for electricity transmission and more. He said that renewable energy production would be doubled within three years. The question is whether he was counting on hydroelectricity as part of renewables. This enormous investment will create jobs and get the wheels rolling under the economy and the hope is that this will generate income for the government so that the money they paid out can be returned.

Yesterday was also an important day for our research group. The prestigious journal Energy Policy accepted for publication our article titled:

Giant oil field decline rates and their influence on world oil production

What we show in the article is that the crude oil production from those oilfields in production today (a little over 70 billion barrels per day) will decline to approximately 20 million barrels per day by 2030. If we are then to have the same level of production that we have today, we must bring online new production equivalent to 50 million barrels per day. During the three years that Obama mentioned above, production will decline by 12 million barrels per day which is more than Saudi Arabia’s current daily production. Around the year 2000 the rate of decline was significantly less and it is this acceleration in the rate of decline that is one of the article’s important points.

I går undertecknade President Obama det dokument som förvandlade Representanthusets beslut att ställa upp med $787 miljarder till lag. En viktig dag för USA. I sitt tal inför undertecknandet poängterade han vikten av att förändra energisystemet i USA. Hela infrastrukturen skall moderniseras, nya järnvägar, renoverade vägar, nya kraftledningar för överföring av elektricitet, mm. Vad det gäller förnybar energi nämnde han att den skulle fördubblas på tre år. Frågan är om han räknade med vattenkraften? Denna enorma satsning skall skapa jobb och få hjulen att rulla och förhoppningen är att detta skall generera inkomster till staten så att man får tillbaka det belopp som man nu delar ut.

Igår var också en viktig dag för vår forskningsgrupp. Den pristigfulla tidskriften Energy Policy godkände då vår artikel med titeln:

Vad vi visar i artikeln är att den råoljeproduktion som finns i dagens producerande oljefält, lite över 70 miljoner fat om dagen, kommer att minska till ca 20 miljoner fat om dagen år 2030. Om vi då skall ha samma nivå på produktionen som idag måste ny produktion motsvarande 50 miljoner fat om dagen komma till. Under de tre år som Obama nämner kommer produktionen att minska med 12 miljoner fat om dagen vilket är mer än vad Saudiarabien producerar idag. Runt år 2000 var minskningen betydligt mindre och det är denna accelererande ökning av minskningstakten som är en av artikelns viktiga slutsatser.
