Four large gas pipelines run through Ukraine that supply the EU with approximately 20% of the gas it uses. For a number of days three of the pipelines have been closed. At midnight last night the fourth was shut down. Some of Europe’s nations are 100% dependent on Russia for gas. These are mostly nations that were formerly part of Eastern Europe. The rest of Europe has stocks that can last for some weeks. Now we really need warm winds from the Atlantic rather than cold northerly winds!
In Sweden we can feel safe since we are only a small dot on the European natural gas map. The Russian natural gas network was constructed during the Soviet era. With Ukraine then inside the Russian sphere of influence it was natural to make Ukraine a important network node. On the map above you can see all the gas pipelines that cross Ukraine. The planned pipeline through the Baltic Sea is intended to be an alternative export route.
While Ukraine is dependent on Russian gas Russia is also dependent upon Ukraine. Presumably, it is this that Ukraine is now trying to demonstrate as they close the gas pipelines. But Ukraine is also dependent on the income it receives from Russia for allowing gas to pass through. If gas does not pass through Ukraine then Russia will not receive any income from it and this will, in its turn, affect the Russian economy.
The gas pipelines in Europe look like a spider’s web and, at the moment, Ukraine sits at its centre.

Genom Ukraina går det fyra stora gasledningar som förser EU med ungefär 20% av den gas som förbrukas. Sedan någon dag tillbaka var tre ledningar stängda och vid midnatt till idag stängdes den fjärde. Några av Europas länder är till 100% beroende av Rysk gas. Det är framförallt länder som tillhörde de forna öststaterna. För övriga Europa finns det lager som kan räcka någon vecka. Nu skulle vi verkligen behöva varma vindar från Atlanten istället för kalla nordanvindar.
Vi i Sverige kan känna oss trygga då vi är en vit fläck på den Europeiska naturgaskartan. Det Ryska naturgasnätet byggdes upp under Sovjettiden och med Ukraina innanför den Ryska intressesfären var det naturligt att göra Ukraina till gasens knutpunkt. På kartan här ovan ser ni alla gasledningar som korsar Ukraina. Den planerade gasledningen i Östersjön är tänkt att vara en alternativ exportväg.
Samtidigt som Ukraina är beroende av Rysk gas är Ryssland beroende av Ukraina och det är förmodligen detta som Ukraina nu vill demonstrera då man stänger gasledningarna, men Ukraina är också beroende av inkomsterna man får från Ryssland för att låta gasen passera landet. Om gasen inte passerar Ukraina så får Ryssland inga inkomster för gasen och detta i sin tur påverkar den Ryska ekonomin.
Gasledningarna i Europa ser ut som ett spindelnät och just nu är det Ukraina som sitter i nätets centrum.
